Hanalei S.C. was four points behind league standings leader Wailua Kryptonite heading into Sundays battle, and they needed a victory badly to change their recent downward trend.
In order to win, Hanalei had to get results from their unproductive, yet powerful front line. That is exactly what they got from right winger Cola Lindman, who registered an assist and two goals during the ninety minutes of play in a 3-2 win over the Kryptonite.
However, Wailua was the first to score, when Duncan MacDonald fought his way to a loose ball on the goal line and chipped it over the goalie to Eddie Adams, who finished it with an easy one touch.
Hanalei S.C. answered with an uncharacteristic three straight goals.
Their first came when Juan Perez, a chippy Mexican whose life is soccer, put a diving header on Cola’s cross into the net.
Tom Green assisted in the next goal sliding a pass into the center. Anthony Tangelder dummied the ball, allowing it to pass through his legs to Cola, who then blasted the ball by the keeper.
Hanalei continued its quality passing, enabling Cola to get a chip off, over the Wailua goalie, making a 3-1 game.
Throughout the second half, both teams had numerous opportunities, but only one goal was scored by the Kryptonite.
Duncan again assisted, bending a free kick around the wall of players in front of him. The ball bounced of the legs of Hanalei goalie, Bobby Tangelder, and Lucas Hassett tapped in the rebound.
At the end of the game the score was 3-2, and Hanalei tightened up the standings to a one point differential.
The Wailua Kryptonite will play the Westside Afterburners on Sunday March 17th.
