The KIF didn’t fare too well on opening day of the Waimea Invitational, held Thursday at both Hanapepe and Waimea ball parks.
The Kapa’a Warriors and Kaua’i Red Raiders each dropped games to off-island teams, sending them into a head-to-head, loser’s bracket match-up which will be played today at 3 p.m. (Waimea field).
Pac-5, Campbell and Lahinaluna will each head to the winner’s bracket, along with Waimea, who beat itself Thursday in an inter-team scrimmage.
– Owen Simmons allowed three hits in seven innings to give Pac-5 a 3-1 win over Leilehua in the first game of the Invitational. Despite Spencer Omalza’s solo-homer in the seventh, Leilehua couldn’t muster the fire power to crack the Pac-5 pitching sensation. Leilehua now heads to the loser’s bracket to play Waimea at 12 p.m. Pac-5 will play the Waimea team who advanced to the winner’s bracket at 3:15 p.m..
– Kapa’a fell victim to the hot pitching of Lahinaluna ace Ikaika Neizman, who dropped the Warriors 12-2 at Waimea Field in first round play. Neizman allowed one run in the first and another in the third, and the Luna’s would roll the rest of the way.
Lahinaluna will next face Campbell today at 12:30 p.m. (Hanapepe Stadium).
– Campbell scored five runs in the final two innings to topple the Kaua’i Red Raiders 7-2 in the final game at Hanapepe Thursday. The Red Raiders had it all tied up at two-apiece in the fifth inning until Keahi Kapana’s RBI double started Campbell’s hitting frenzy. Pitcher William Tennant notched the win for Campbell, allowing seven Red Raider hits in six innings.
