The Kapa’a Warriors fell short on a two-run rally in the seventh to lose to Kaua’i 6-4 in the first game of Saturday’s double-header at Isenberg Park.
Despite a Red Raider error in the final inning that sent Jacklyn Alapai and Tiana Laranio home from second and third, Kapa’a couldn’t catch Kaua’i’s offensive production in the first, third and fifth innings.
The Warriors matched Kaua’i’s intial run in the bottom of the first with an RBI single from Laranio in the third inning, which scored Sandy Pimental.
But Kaua’i regained the lead at the bottom of the third with a two hit, three run inning. Anna Quibilan brought home Starlene Kelekoma on a perfect RBI bunt, and moments later, Shannon Perreira would score from third on a wild pitch. Another lost pitch brought Chelsea “Pua” Kaluahine home, and the Red Raiders led 3-1 going into the fourth.
Kapa’a scraped another run in the fifth after Ashley Silva scored on the third wild pitch of the game, but Kaua’i would counter that in the next series, capitalizing on an error that scored Quibilan. “Pua” scored the second run of the inning, and the Red Raiders were in command the rest of the way.
Kapa’a would scrape two more runs in the seventh, but it wasn’t enough to beat the Red Raiders, who scored six runs on seven hits in five innings.
Kapa’a 8, Kaua’i 7
Kapa’a’s eight runs on six hits in the first three innings amassed a big enough Warrior lead to hold off Kaua’i in the second game of Saturday’s double-header at Isenberg Park, although the Red Raiders climbed back to within one run going into the seventh inning.
Kapa’a got Red Raider pitcher Anna Quibilan into trouble in the first and third innings, notching six hits on the hurler, loading the bases twice and scoring on two walks. Cassandra Wong hit an RBI single, scoring Jacklyn Alapai, and Lahela Laranio hit a sacrifice fly that sent Tiana Laranio home from third to round out the first.
Alapai’s RBI double, scoring Laranio and Reveen Ornellas, accounted for the tail end of the eight runs the Warriors scored after three innings.
They wouldn’t score again, and Kaua’i began to chip into the lead.
The Red Raiders scored two runs on errors in the fifth – one in the outfield that sent Starlene Kelekoma home, and the other an infield blooper which scored Quibilan.
Kaua’i notched another run in the sixth after the Warriors threw Tyrene Kaluahine out on second but forgot about Jenna Mercado, who waltzed to home plate from third.
But Laranio would pitch a dazzling seventh inning and crush Kaua’i’s hopes of an Isenberg sweep.
