It was the first KIF at-bat for Kapa’a freshman Moana DeSilva, and it may the one she will most fondly remember throughout the next four years.
Desilva, patiently awaiting the right pitch-her knees wobbling in a steady commotion-drilled a low fastball to left-center, sending teammate Tierra Rapozo home from second and igniting a three-run, three hit rally that gave the Warriors a 5-3 victory over the Kaua’i Red Raiders at Isenberg Park.
It became the Warrior’s first KIF victory of the season.
Kapa’a struggled at the plate in the beginning, recording only two hits in five scoreless innings.
Their infield defense wasn’t so hot at the onset, either.
Two costly Warrior infield errors-one which scored Kaua’i’s Kainoa Dejos from second, and put Sarah Yoshikawa into scoring position-capped a two-hit, two-run inning for the Red Raiders, who took a 2-0 lead going into the second inning with help from Tyrene Kluahine’s RBI single.
A third Warrior error-this one in the second-scored Jenna Mercado and gave the Red Raiders a 3-0 cushion going into the third.
Both teams would remain scoreless until the sixth, when the Warrior bats came alive.
A Red Raider error landed Lahela Laranio on second (she reached first on the error and stole second). Jacklyn Alapai hit a single to center, and following a second Red Raider error in the outfield, Laranio was able to put Kapa’a on the board, 3-1.
Moments later, Warrior catcher Cassandra Wong smacked a pretty floater to center, sending Alapai home and giving the Warriors hope going into the final inning.
DeSilva answered in the seventh, scoring the tying RBI. An RBI single from Laranio and an RBI double from Alapai scored two more runs in the inning for the Warriors, and it was enough to give them their first win of the KIF season, 5-3.
