Players of the Year
– KIF Football –
Offense-Chesley Barba (Running Back): There was the power running of Jordan Dizon, the nimble play of Kaua’i quarterback Kamoi Refamonte, and the utility beat of Rayson Cacal. And still it is no surprise that this year’s KIF player of the year award goes to Chesley Barba. By far the most consistent running back, Barba is the kind of guy that proves size can never conquer speed and quickness. The 5-3, 135 lb. back might have been too quick for KIF and OIA linemen….he may also have been too small for them to catch. At any rate, his consistent 100-yard games have made this Menehune the most dangerous offensive threat in the KIF.
Defense-Mark Ruiz (Defensive Lineman): Mark Ruiz is the guy no one notices-except if your a quarterback, running back, or coach in HHSAA football. D-lineman rarely get noticed, but it was hard for the KIF not to notice this defensive wall. Every KIF coach can undeniably give this hard-nosed baller the defensive player of the year prize. Only listed at 5-10, 200 pounds, Ruiz showed the mobility of a linebacker, working sideline-to-sideline against the Castle Knights in the quarterfinal playoffs. He made numerous tackles and had two fumble recoveries in that game alone. He is the consummate playmaker, and more than anyone, deserved the recognition he never had before.
– KIF Volleyball –
Girls-Tiana Lum-Tucker (OH): Maybe it’s a product of tennis, maybe it’s just sheer natural ability. But no one could avoid a quick squint when Lum-Tucker dropped one of her damaging kills on even the best KIF back-line specialists. This girl was money all year long. Like a hero of folklore, no one knew the exact numbers of kills she had in a game. “I think she dropped, like, 32 in two games,” one source told the Garden Island. “No, that’s impossible. Wasn’t it around 13 a game?,” another said. Regardless of the numbers, Lum-Tucker was the best girl volleyball player in Kaua’i-bar none- and the at-ease attitude she projects during each game proved why #29 waltzed her way to an uncontested Player of the Year award.
Boys-James Marques (OH): We can give Marques the Player of the Year Award, but it wouldn’t be enough. Let’s put the Player with Most Instensity, Most Athleticism, and Most Effective Leader Trophies up on that mantle with the ole’ POY shiner. Besides being athletic, Marques also had the attitude, the desire to win, and the clutch power to hit the decisive kills towards the end of the game. In a league where any team had a chance to acquire a state birth, Marques proved that one man can, in fact, be the difference. Every team had the talent to move on, but no team had James Marques. The intensity and leadership that goes along with this talented young athlete was too much for opposing KIF teams to handle.
