Memorial Day yacht racing results
Memorial Day weekend was made-to-order for fun at the Nawiliwili Yacht Club. There was no wind for the 9 a.m. start, but just as the 10-minute warning gun went off, the breeze started to fill in. It continued to blow at 10-17 knots for the rest of the day. The fastest elapsed time was scored by Prindle 19 MX, “Machine Gun Etiquette” who sailed the 30-mile course in 2 hours, 31 minutes, 18 seconds. The multihull “Malihini” (35′ Schuttleworth Cat) broke her best record by arriving in 3 hours, 58 minutes, 51 seconds, and the first monohull in was “Fidelia” (40′ Wells sloop) who made the trip in 4 hours, 30 minutes, 06 seconds.
A good size group of NYC members and friends gathered at the Hanalei Pavilion to party and to greet the arriving crews. Trophies were presented to the winners.
Only three boats continued on “Around The Island” the next day. The wind blew strong (15-30 knots) from Hanalei to Nualolo but dwindled to nearly nothing as the boats navigated the West Shoreline. Coyote and Coquette gave it up, and started their engines, but Malihini hung in there and finished Leg 1 in 7 hours 26 minutes 15 seconds. After a calm and restful night in Wahiawa Bay, the boats sailed the final 22-mile course to Nawiliwili in a gentle offshore breeze. Malihini was the only boat still racing and finished in 5 hours 58 minutes 10 seconds.
