KALAHEO – With just seven seconds remaining on the regulation clock, Kapa’a Lokahi’s Sarah Lindsey launched the ball from deep behind the 3-point line amidst the din of anxious coaches, team mates and parents during the Kaua’i Youth Basketball Association (KYBA) girls 12-and-under matchup Monday night.
The ball swished silently through the hoop. A moment of disbelief then unfolded, as the team and audience realized the 16-16 deadlock situation of the game with the clock ticking down.
All evening, the Waimea Boys & Girls Club Minihunes had managed to keep Lokahi at bay – ending the first quarter with just a digit lead, 4-3. Holding Lokahi to just a pair in the second quarter, the Minihunes held the digit lead at the half, 7-6, before exploding for an 8-0 third quarter run, outdistancing Lokahi 14-7 at the buzzer.
But, Kapa’a was not to be denied, as they scrapped back behind the hand of Camden Lorenz, who tucked in six of Lokahi’s nine-point fourth-period rally.
With the game tied 16-16, Lindsey promptly blocked a last-second shot attempt by Waimea’s Brandi Hustace to send the game into overtime. Moani Durant chalked up a pair for the Minihunes, but was answered by Lokahi, and as KBYA officials debated the details of the second OT, Durant nailed the game-winning bucket at the buzzer as the center capitalized on a Lokahi turnover at midcourt. The Minihunes prevailed 20-18.
