With its height and outstanding guard play, the Big Island won the Hawai’i Government Employees’ Association basketball tournament Saturday at Kaua’i High School.
The Big Island and Oahu entered the final game of the round-robin competition with 2-0 records. The Big Island jumped to a 10-2 lead and never looked back, cruising to a 59-43 victory.
Kaua’i finished in third place with a 1-2 record. Maui ended the tourney 0-3.
The most exciting game of the tournament unfolded Saturday morning, when Oahu scraped by Kaua’i, 57-55.
The hosts clawed back from a hefty deficit late in the second half. With five seconds remaining, Kaua’i tied the game 55-55, but couldn’t hold off Oahu.
Kaua’i also got within six points of the Big Island on Friday night, but couldn’t close the gap.
The HGEA teams are made up of all-stars from the respective island leagues. The tournament moves from island to island each year.
