Swimmer Anaya on way to championships
This weekend will be the moment of truth for Keenan Anaya. The 12-year-old swimmer has taken the state by storm with his powerful presence in the water.
Beginning June 8, Anaya will face his stiffest challenge, as he travels to the Big Island to represent Mokihana Aquatics in the Age Group Longcourse Championship.
Though he’s qualified to swim every event offered, state rules will limit Anaya to just eight. He will swim the 50- and 100-meter butterfly, 50- and 100-meter backstroke, 50-, 100- and 200-meter freestyle and the 200-meter individual medley.
The Kauaian’s most imposing competition is expected to come from Oahu swimmer Ikaika Earl, also 12. Anaya should dominate the butterfly events; Earl is expected to win the breaststroke. The freestyle showdowns could decide the high-point winner in the 11-12 year-old age group.
The championships run through June 11.
HGEA basketball tourney this weekend
Some of the state’s top recreational basketball players will be on Kaua’i this weekend for the Hawai’i Government Employees Association All-Start Tournament.
Oahu, Maui and the Big Island are scheduled to bring the top players from their respective HGEA leagues for a round-robin competition Friday and Saturday, June 8-9, at Kaua’i High School.
In years’ past, teams – particularly from Oahu and the Big Island – have been stocked with former college players and other standouts. The same is expected this year.
The tournament kicks off Friday night at 6 p.m. when Oahu and Maui will battle. Kaua’i will take on the Big Island beginning around 7 p.m.
Saturday’s games begin at 9 a.m. and run through 12 p.m.
The Kaua’i all-stars are comprised mainly of players from The Hui. It won the Kaua’i league.
