Summer League baseball interest?
Waimea High School softball coach Pat Baniaga is trying to spark an interest in baseball. He is trying to get the wheels turning on an independent Summer Baseball League for players between the ages of 15 and 18.
The league’s purpose would be to provide an opportunity for players to keep and improve their baseball skills and talents.
At least three teams would be needed to start the league. Entry fee would consist of cost for liability insurance and umpires. Each team would be responsible for their own uniforms, equipment and other essentials.
Any interested coach should call Baniaga at 335-3169 or 651-5880 no later than June 15, so an organizational meeting can be scheduled.

17-under playoffs down to two teams
The County of Kaua’i’s 17-and-under boys basketball playoffs continued Tuesday night at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
There were no surprises, as top-seeded Waimea won consecutive games in the loser’s bracket to work its way into Thursday’s championship game against North East. In fact, Waimea blasted both of Tuesday’s foes by at least 20 points.
In the opener, Jordon Dizon scored 13 points, as Waimea defeated the Red Dirt Boys 59-39. Noel Ballesteros managed 11 for the Boys.
Immediately following that game, Waimea took the floor in a semifinal game against Team Faith. Waimea won 74-39, as Austin Alquiza scored 20 points. Shawn Kaona led Faith with 16.
Faith was awarded third place.
Thursday’s final is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Kalaheo Neighborhood Center. Waimea would need to beat North East twice to win, as the tournament is double-elimination.
