The much-anticipated final will not come to pass.
The Kaua’i girls doubles team of Tiana Lum-Tucker and Kareen Konishi, seeded second in the 2001 Carlsmith Ball State Tennis Championship, was upset Saturday in the semifinal round. The pair will battle Baldwin’s Lauren Matsushita and Jenna Umeno for third place on Monday afternoon at Punahou School in Honolulu.
Kamehameha’s Kaloi sisters were able to hold up their end of the bargain in the projected battle between the first- and second-seeded teams.
But the Red Raider girls – the final KIF representative still playing – could not get it done. They lost 8-3 to Noelle Lee and Miclynn Crail of Iolani.
Lum-Tucker and Konishi were not victim’s of the biggest upset, however. That distinction belonged to third-seeded Dru Kanuha of Kealakehe, who fell 9-8 (5) to Kamehameha’s Tyler Black, the sixth seed.
Black will face top-seeded Ikaika Jobe of Punahou in the final. The top seed in all four events advanced successfully to the final.
