Kaua’i’s Poipu Bay Golf Course has become the first in Hawai’i to implement tournament scoring capabilities as part of its in-cart satellite tracing system.
Last year, Poipu Bay completed installation of the interactive ProLink satellite information system into all its carts.
The in-cart color monitors show graphic displays of hole and green layouts, and the hands-free system allows golfers to monitor their pace of play, locate the hole and track their ball. The system will allow them to determine the yardage from the cart to the daily hole placement, bunkers and other trouble spots.
As part of the system, course rules are provided and pro tips are offered for each hole. In addition, two-way messages can be sent to and from the pro shop in case of cart trouble or emergency.
Recently, Poipu Bay upgraded the system by activating its tournament scoring program, which provides real-time scoring of tournaments for up to 144 players. Handicap information is incorporated into the scoring and real-time leaderboards can be displayed on the individual cart monitors as well as on the screens in the clubhouse. Scores can also be accessed via the Internet for those non-players wishing to keep abreast of play.
“The new scoring system makes tournament management and monitoring so much simpler,” Poipu Bay head pro Michael Castillo said. “It also increases the excitement and challenge of the tournament by allowing players to know where they stand in the competition at any given time.”
