May 12, Kaua’i Interscholastic Federation golfers who survived the 36-hole qualifier, will represent the island in the Hawai’i High School Activities Association’s first spring state competition.
Eighteen youngsters, in fact, will travel to Maui Friday for Saturday’s competition. And the bulk of them will be Kaua’i Red Raiders.
In impressive displays by each, Kaua’i’s Casey Watabu and Rachel Kyono secured the KIF individual championship for the boys and girls, respectively.
None could get within nine strokes of Watabu or 10 strokes of Kyono.
“I’m really proud of those two,” Kaua’i golf coach Winston Ogata said. “They played some good golf.”
They were not alone. Five of the eight state-bound boys are Red Raiders, as are six of the state-bound girls.
“We’ve had a pretty good year,” Ogata said. “I’ll be looking forward to the state tournament.”
The KIF Qualifier was played April 28 at Princeville and May 5 at Pua Kea, in 18-hole increments.
The state tourneys will be 36-hole events at sites to be determined on Maui.
