The Kaua-i Historical Society will present a free slide and lecture presentation on the life and times of John Thomas Gulick on Thursday, March 22, at the Waimea United Church of Christ (Waimea Christian Church) at 6 p.m.
Dr. E. Alison Kay, Professor of Zoology at the University of Hawai-i will discuss the life and times of Gulick (1832-1923).
Gulick’s father Rev. Peter Gulick, was a missionary at the Waimea Christian Church in 1823, so it seemed appropriate to conduct the lecture at his father’s church.
Gulick was an evolutionist, missionary and naturalist who met Charles Darwin in London. It was said Gulick came to visit Darwin for tea and stayed for dinner. Dr. Kay will explain the details of that meeting and the life of Gulick.
E. Alison Kay is a long time member of the Kaua-i Historical Society and was born in Waimea and raised surfing a Brennecke’s. She has taught Natural History of the Hawaiian Islands at the U of H for the last 30 years and her publications include “Hawaiian Marine Shells,” “Shells of Hawaii” and “A Natural History of the Hawaiian Islands.”
This lecture is made possible through a grant from the Annie Sinclair Knudsen Fund, which is part of the Hawai-i Community Foundation.
