Church reaching out through athletic ventures
In conjunction with Freedom Fest Kaua’i, a religious outreach scheduled for March 26-31 at various spots around the island, the Surfer’s For Christ will be hosting the Freedom Fest Surf Contest. The event is scheduled for March 31 at 7 a.m. at Prince Kuhio’s. Divisions contested include short board, long board and body board, and will be open to participants of all ages.
The contest will be free to all entrants, and will include a barbeque and a band to follow. Trophies will be awarded Sunday afternoon at Vidinha Stadium during the Freedom Fest Kaua’i Celebration. Kapena will be the featured act at the gathering.
Contest entry forms are available at surf shops around the island. They should be post marked by March 23, and mailed to the following address: P.O. Box 210, Eleele, HI 96705.
Surfing won’t be the only activity associated with Freedom Fest. The outreach also will sponsor a golf tournament at Kaua’i Lagoons — Mokihana Course — on Saturday, March 31. The event is scheduled for a shotgun start at 8 a.m. Registration begins at 6:30 a.m.
As part of the $45 fee, every player will receive a hat, a sleeve of balls, tees and markers. A post-tournament awards ceremony with a full lunch buffet will also be included.
The format of the tournament is four-person scramble with team, longest drive and closest-to-the-pin prizes awarded.
Fill out the registration and mail it with your payment to Kaua’i Lagoons c/o Freedom Fest Kaua’i Golf Tournament, 3351 Hoolaulea Way, Lihu’e, HI 96766. Make checks payable to Kaua’i Lagoons. Registration deadline is March 28.
