POIPU — It seems it would be safe to say the Kaua’i girls tennis team will be tough to beat in 2001.
In their Kaua’i Interscholastic Federation opener Saturday, the Lady Raiders crushed Kapa’a 5-0, dropping just 16 total games in the five matches. Kaua’i is now 1-0 on the year. Kapa’a falls to 1-1.
The tone for the girls’ match was set by Kaua’i first and second singles players. Between them, Kareen Konishi and Tiana Lum-Tucker dropped just three games in discarding of Kapa’a’s Serina Roush and Shantelle DeMille, respectively.
In a closer battle, the Kaua’i boys got the best of Kapa’a, 3-2. The Red Raiders are now 1-0, while the Warriors drop to 0-2 on the season.

In its first match of the year, the Waimea girls fell to Kapa’a 5-0, while the boys defeated the Warriors 4-1.
The matches are slated to begin at 9 a.m. at the Waimea High School tennis courts.
