KAPA’A — If Kaua’i’s Mark Rodrigues is going to play like this all year, then spectators are in for quite a treat.
The senior belted out four more hits Friday to lead the Red Raiders to a 10-7 victory over Roosevelt at the 19th Annual Ron Martin Baseball Tournament.
Rodrigues is 7-for-7 from the plate over Kaua’i’s first two games. He’s connected for a home run, two doubles and four singles.
The victory should do plenty for the Red Raiders’ confidence. The Bulldogs qualified for the state tournament last year, and are expected to challenge for OIA supremacy in 2001. The victory improved Kaua’i to 2-0 in tournament play with games against St. Joseph and Kapa’a scheduled for Saturday afternoon. The Red Raiders are the tourney’s defending champions.
Early in the game, a pitcher’s duel unfolded between Kaua’i and Roosevelt. The Red Raiders’ punched through for two runs in the top of the third. But the Bulldogs sent two of their own across the plate in the bottom half. Kaua’i regained the lead in the top of the fifth with two runs.
But Red Raiders’ pitcher Scott Oshima opened the doors for Roosevelt in the bottom half of the inning, as the Bulldogs tallied four runs.
But Kaua’i lit up for six runs in the top of the sixth. Oshima stayed on for a couple of batters in the bottom of the inning to pick up the victory; he struck out two and walked three for the game. Roosevelt’s Ivan Fujii suffered the loss.
Levi Rapozo provided the Red Raiders with a 2-for-4 outing at the plate. Kaua’i RBI belonged to Rodrigues (2), Scott Serizawa, Kwinton Estacio and Kamanu Grace.
