Sharlene Carillo, a sophomore at Kapa’a High School, left for Phoenix, Ariz., Thursday, March 1, where she was to be the sole Hawai’i representative competing in the Pacific Regionals of the Fitness Authority Competition.
She is competing in the 14-15 girls’ division. Her father, Clayton Sasil, on the coaching staff of the Kapa’a junior varsity football team, feels her most serious competition will come from a pair of Alaskans, but said it’s hard to say, since there will be competitors coming from eight states.
Should Carillo win her division at the regional competition, she will continue on to the national competition, scheduled for March 31 in Florida.
Carillo credits her sponsor, Gary Maguire of the Kapa’a Boys and Girls Club, for having the faith to submit her results for consideration to the regional competition.
A member of the Kapa’a organization for the past two years, Carillo and other members of the B & G Club went through a series of fitness drills including sit ups, push ups, lateral hops, jump rope, and vertical jump. Results of this local event were compared at the state level to decide which competitors would continue on to the regionals.
Sasil added that at the regional two more events will be added to the competition, including the 100- and 800-meter run.
A smile crossed the lips of the sophomore who was a strong cross country runner for the Kapa’a Warriors during the 2000 cross country season.
Carillo’s mom, Loke, will accompany the athlete to the regionals.
