The Kaua’i Council of the Navy League of the United States will be adopting the U.S. Coast Guard Kittiwake this morning.
The ceremony is scheduled at 11 a.m. in Nawiliwili Harbor. Through the adoption, the council hopes to foster a stronger relationship between the ship and its crew and the Kaua’i community and to help the ship’s crew share outings, picnics and cruises with residents and their families.
The ship will select a “sailor of the quarter” who will be honored by the council and crewmembers, the council said.
The Kittiwake, an 87-foot vessel bought at a cost of $3.5 million, was christened last summer and is commanded by Lt. JG Jennifer Cook.
Cook, who has a command about 20 men, became the first female commanding officer at the Kaua’i facility.
In her mid-20s, Cook is among only a 20 or so officers in her age range who run a Coast Guard station.
