KEKAHA — An 89-year-old Kekaha man sustained broken ribs after he was attacked
Wednesday evening at a bible study session at the Door of Faith Church on
Kekaha Road.
The attack was apparently provoked by chickens running from
one property to another.
Chuck Trepkowski, 53, of Kekaha had complained
about chickens running from the home of the victim, Ralph Fernandez, to his
home. The men live across from each other on Kekaha Road.
Trepkowski was
charged by police officers with third-degree assault and was released after
posting bail.
Following the 9 p.m. assault, Fernandez was treated at the
Kaua’i Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waimea and released.
Lucena Fernandez
said her husband and others were taking part in a bible study when Trepkowski,
whom witnesses said was inebriated, attacked Fernandez.
According to a
witness, Trepkowski threw a chair at Fernandez.
Fernandez was subsequently
transported by ambulance to the Kaua’i Veterans Memorial Hospital for treatment
and was released to his family around 11 p.m.
Mrs. Fernandez, 89, said the
reason for the assault mystifies her.
“We don’t keep chickens, she said.
“We can’t control them. They are over all the plantation.”
