The Aloha Temple, Kauai District, Shriners have “lucked out this year for their 6th Annual Pop Warner Shrine Classic.
With three games on tape for Saturday between three Oahu teams and three teams from Kauai, the feature game of the three will be between the Hanapepe Colts and the Kainalu Bantams from Oahu.. both undefeated during regular season and post season play.
The Hanapepe Colts went undefeated in eight games during the regular season.. won the Mokihana Bowl game against the number two club of Oahu and won an exhibition game on Oahu last Sunday.
With a record that equals this, the Kainalu Bantams won all their games in regular season play and last weekend won 31 to 12 in the “Raisin Bowl” in Fresno, California.
The “Rose Bowl” game in Pasadena has nothing on the 1968 Shrine Game as a battle between two undefeated teams is a promoters., players., fans dream, and is for the State Championship.
Dick Ueoka of the Colts is in pretty good shape with all of his ball players ready to see action with the exception of Irving Soto, hard running back of the Colts, however John Jacintho has shown real promise and should be able to fill the shoes of Soto.
Beside the Championship game between Hanapepe and Kainalu, two “naturals” shape up as the first and second games.
The first game that starts at 4:30 will be between the Kapaa 49ers and the Kaneohe Rams from Oahu.
In the second game the Kauai Runners up Koloa Packers will take on the Palolo Bantams from Oahu.
The Championship game between Hanapepe and Kainalu is the forerunner of a regular State Championship starting with the 1969 Season, when the winner of Kauai will play the winner of the Oahu League with the Kauai-Oahu victor going to the Big Island to play for the State Championship.
In pre-season and post season games the Kauai teams have edged or beaten badly the Oahu teams so it looks like the Shrine Classic this year could be a clean sweep for the three top teams of the Pop Warner League.
