Hooser’s voice on point, much needed
To the Editor, Kudos to Bill Buley and The Garden Island newspaper for giving Mr. Gary Hooser a regular forum on the editorial page. Since I first began reading Mr. Hooser’s words I wondered why he was not Mayor of Kauai, or even better Governor of Hawaii. His recent column on how Hawaii could become the Geneva of the Pacific was right on point. His views on term limits for Council members make perfect sense. I know Mr. Hooser has many fans on Kauai. I also know that there are entrenched powerful forces which prevent Mr. Hooser from successfully being elected to higher office. But thanks to your paper we can continue to be well informed by his revelatory insights. Mahalo for that.

Mural misunderstanding
Editor’s Note: Dan Madsen was commissioned painted a mural in Kapaa on Jan. 24, which was painted over a week later.
The landlord came by when we were working on the mural, and it sounded like he liked it and didn’t have a problem with us finishing. I understand it’s his property, and he can absolutely do whatever he wants with his wall.
It seems like (from the point of a fellow business owner) it would behoove him to support his tenants in their pursuit of marketing. If they are trying to bring positive action to their community and attention/attraction to their businesses, it benefits everyone. They are trying to do everything they can to pay rent. By asking us to paint something on their wall that is going to draw people’s eyes towards their doors and take pictures in front of their business. That seems like a good thing. We did the painting basically for free, so it’s sad to see it go for all involved. But the process was certainly positive with lots of good feedback!

Jeannette, Yes, he has all the intellectual requirements, intelligence, and experience to fill those political positions. He is lacking three prerequisites in the most openly racist State in the Union,……..his name is wrong, his race is wrong, and the color of his skin. Hence, the real reason the “Born and raised on Kauai” trumps any more qualified individual that would run for those positions.
the reason a very qualified Mr Hooser is NOT our mayor? Can you say ‘ra…ci…sm’?
Sad you would say that he is not what you think–if there were Racism -he would not have been to all the offices he has held-from counsel to senate, the people got smart.
Gary knows why he is not mayor— look at what he just put in the news Paper.
He Has not done much for Kauai .
and during a sad time he write a forum to talk down to people ,.
Grab a shovel Gary -and help and make sure you pay your taxes .
I was starting to soften up to him till my friend pointed out the forum.
No person, or business, has the right to violate codes, the sensitivity of an area, or try to capture your business by defacing a wall or building with graffiti-like non art! There is too much real graffiti on Kauai already! Making it part of every businesses method to trap customers is ludicrous! Keep your graffiti on the Big Island, or anywhere else the population is foolish enough to encourage it!
Ms. Kinzer (63), the real problem here is that Gary Hooser is desperately trying to make Kauai into California; something that this newspaper apparently espouses in its unending publishing of his propaganda. His vast majority of followers are wealthy faux farmers, transplant retirees, old hippies and Realtors, all of whom are making Kauai too expensive for local folks to live here, not to mention the character changes to our communities he espouses. I think the call for “Yankee Go Home” has never been more appropriate.
So true they don’t know Gary like we do so don’t be to hard on them.
Gary is only for Gary.
“I also know that there are entrenched powerful forces which prevent Mr. Hooser from successfully being elected to higher office.” A conspiracy?
No Jeanette, it’s, like, the voters. Hooser is a left progressive and under it all Kauai’s people are not buying it. You are, it appears, an exception—start a fan club.

Sorry guy, graffiti doesn’t benefit everyone.
Ms. Kinzer … I like mr. Hooser as well he is a nice man and genuinely cares for the people of Kauai. The problem I have is he relies on a pro- government approach to issues and because of that he becomes a part of government wasting millions trying to protect us from ourselves. The problem with politicians is they don’t know how to step out of the political box and think for themselves and for that we become the losers for their actions.
Ms. Kinzer…. Just what are the powerful sources you speak of?
Did Hooser really care for the local people on Kauai or wanted to make or comfortable living here for all the transplants? Can’t mow your lawn until 9 a.m., no burning rubbish(now our land field is full to the max).
