Kauai beats Waimea on walk-off hit; both teams combine for 9 HRs

LIHUE — In a game in which both team combined for nine home runs, the Red Raiders endured to win on a walk-off. Kauai High School’s varsity softball team defeated Waimea High, 16-15, Wednesday night at Isenberg Park in Lihue in the Kauai Interscholastic Federation season opener.

Gummerus, Tecson named POYs

As voted for by the league’s coaches, this year’s Kauai Interscholastic Federation basketball all-stars have been announced. The list of standouts was released by the league late Wednesday. Kauai High School senior Kaimani Tecson was named KIF boys Player of the Year, and Waimea High School sophomore Kierstin Gummerus is the girls Player of the Year.

Rookies, Gents, A’s have big weekends

LIHUE — Headed into the third month of play, the Kauai Senior Softball League enjoyed not only great weather but another high-scoring weekend with action-packed games at the Isenberg Ballpark in Lihue and the softball stadium at Puhi Park.

The Rainbow Warriors had a slightly better round in day two. The second round of the annual John A. Burns Intercollegiate men’s golf tournament, hosted by the University of Hawaii, was contested Friday at the Wailua Golf Course.

WAILUA — Kapaa High School alumnus Bryden Salvador opened with a 5-over-77 in the first round of the 43rd annual John A. Burns Intercollegiate on Thursday at the Wailua Golf Course. Salvador, a University of Hawaii senior, is tied with 11 others in 86th place on the individual leaderboard.

Four years ago, Bryden Salvador thought he had all the time in the world. Now, he’s trying to soak in as much as possible before his college career ends. “I’m trying to take it in slow to be honest. It just happened so quick. When I first started here, I was like, ‘I have four years ahead of me. I’m playing my first tournament here.’ Now that it’s come to this point in time, I’m just like, ‘Where did the time go?’” Salvador said. “I’m trying to take in everything around me slowly. Just trying to let it sink in and just trying to enjoy it while it lasts. Once this tournament is over, it’s done, and I’ll just look back at it as a memory.”

Club Moto Kauai planning future track in Kalepa

WAILUA — Club Moto Kauai, a nonprofit that runs the Wailua Motocross Track, is moving forward with plans to relocate to a track in Kalepa near Hanamaulu. The club plans to have the new Kalepa track built sometime in the next year or two.

KIF wrestlers grapple at state tourney

Six wrestlers from the Kauai Interscholastic Federation were still in contention late Wednesday to compete in the second day of the 2019 Texaco Wrestling Championships at the Neal S. Blaisdell Center in Honolulu.

PUHI — Persistent showers made a quagmire of the Wailua Houselots Garden Park Softball diamond, forcing the Kauai Senior Softball League to rapidly rearrange the schedule and make use of the softball stadium in Puhi Park. Despite the storm, the park in Puhi handled the weather well and was in fine condition for play.
