Happy New Year! Now that the future is the past with 2015 behind us (“Back to the Future, Part II” reference — geek alert), all sorts of exciting new things await us beginning with the continuing run of “Star Wars — The Force Awakens” (a.k.a. Episode VII), the long-awaited next chapter in the Star Wars film saga. By now, you may have seen (or are waiting to see) this record-breaking blockbuster movie. Grossing over a BILLION dollars worldwide, it is showing no signs of slowing down, with everyone planning on seeing it at least two or three more times (seen it twice already!).
There is a lot going on in this new movie, and being introduced to both old and new characters (even with repeat viewings) there is still so much to see. That being said, this week’s book perfectly coincides with the new film! Publisher DK (always high-quality books) has released this beautiful new book, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens — The Visual Dictionary,” and what a guide it is!
This large format hardcover is beautifully laid out, covering all the characters, ships, droids, weaponry and supplementary characters as well. We found it really interesting how much back story the book gives for each of the characters and their universe, providing greater depth to what was portrayed on-screen. It explains the transitions between the end of “Return of the Jedi” and this new film, how the defeated Empire changed into the New Republic and the creation of the villainous First Order, wonderfully providing a richer context to enjoy the film with. It even reveals the inner workings of the famous lightsabers! Best of all, it is written for both kids and adults to enjoy equally.
Until next week, “May the Force be with you!”
