PUHI — The Coco Palms renovation project is still alive.
The Kauai County Planning Commission today scheduled a status hearing for the developers, Coco Palms Hui, LLC, on April 26. At that time, the commission will see if there’s movement on the $135 million project before they consider revoking the demolition permits.
“We want to see this project go through, but the obligations have not been met,” said Mike Dahilig, county’s planning director.
He said he introduced the petition to set a hearing to show cause and to modify or revoke the Honolulu-based redevelopment company’s permits because it is obvious they won’t complete demolition by the April 13 deadline.
Setting a status hearing instead of a hearing to decide what to do with the permits will give the developers a chance to secure their loan.
“We are pleased with the commission’s action this morning that allows us to close (our loan) and start demolition shortly,” said Chad Waters, one of the management partners.
Coco Palms has been shuttered since it was destroyed by Hurricane Iniki in 1992. Developers hope to return it to its glory days.
