The Hilo High School Vikings girls soccer team will spend the weekend on Kauai, playing preseason matches against Kapaa, Kauai and Waimea high school.
“Under new head coach Skee Saplan, the Viking girls are looking forward to the preseason games,” said Curtis Chong, a Vikings assistant coach. “We arrive Friday with 24 players, including seven seniors and four coaches.”
Kapaa High School girls, last season’s Kauai Interscholastic Federation champions and second-seed at the state tournament, open weekend play Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. at the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Sports Complex at Wailua due to Vidinha Stadium being lined for the Saturday First Hawaiian Bank Hawaii High School Athletic Association state football Division II semifinals.
On Saturday, Kauai High School, runner up in the KIF and successful through two rounds of state play before being downed by top-seeded Hawaii Preparatory Academy, will take on the Vikings at Hanapepe Stadium starting at 10 a.m., and Waimea High School will meet the Vikings in a 3:30 p.m. game, also at Hanapepe Stadium.
Hilo finished its season with an undefeated 11-0 record as the Big Island Interscholastic Federation Division II champions before ending sixth at the state Division I tournament.
