KAPAA — There were some clean feet, and a lot of love, along Ke Ala Hele Makalae near the end of Niu Street in Kapaa, said Rev. Ryan Newman of the All Saints’ Episcopal Church and Preschool Thursday.
“We didn’t do as many feet washings, but we gave out a lot of water and talked story with a lot of people,” Newman said. “This is a lot of love going on.”
The All Saints’ Church hosted its first Clean Feet & Cold Water outreach ministry in the same spirit as Ashes to Go and Ash Wednesday, and the Laundry Love each Wednesday at the Kapaa Laundromat.
Newman joined church volunteers in washing the feet of anyone passing by just as Jesus washed the feet of his disciples.
“On the night before his death, Jesus set an example for his disciples by washing their feet, an act of humble service,” Newman said. “Following in the footsteps of our other outreach ministries, we really felt we are being called by God to bring to the community the loving and humble act of washing one’s feet during Holy Week.”
Bill and Heather MacKenney of Redmond, Washington, accepted a cold bottle of water.
“This is good,” Heather MacKenney said.
During Holy Week, All Saints’ will host 16 services, including five Easter services, two outreach projects and an Easter Festival.
“We are living into our vision to be a cathedral for the people of Kauai,” Newman said. “As Christians, we are called to respect the dignity of every human being. When we wash someone’s feet, give them a cold bottle of water during a hot day, and spend time talking story, I want to believe we are living out the love of Christ in a small, yet tangible way.”
