A boat race that takes two years and covers the world? John Hawkins only recently arrived on Kaua‘i, and was visiting Tony LeHoven (another sailor) at the Talk Story Bookstore in Hanapepe (Natalie is “Da Boss,” Ed Justus said), who was doing a book signing on Friday. Tony said John will probably get his feet wet with the Nawiliwili Yacht Club racing series (it’s coming up in February).

The book signing is a good reason to check out the land of the red lilikoi and Friday Night Art (Chef Ku‘u of Hanapepe Cafe had a line before things even got started, and Holly Ka‘iakapu had some recent denim upcycled wear that helped draw the crowd).
Grown, Not Flown had the night off, so he could be in shape for the Wailua Bay Creators Fair (can’t believe it’s today — Chinese New Year! — from 8:30 a.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn Wailua Bay Kaua‘i), the Iguchis said (Papa went to check out Ka Wa Kani Le‘a (ask them about the 3-to-the-third-power) that was doing kanikapila outside the Talk Story Bookstore on Hanapepe’s Friday Art Night (good thing the side entrance was open so you could check out the red lilikoi (how come the bees don’t come around at sunset like they do the Hong Kong orchid?).
OK, Kung Hei Fat Choy. Time to check with Amy Chun of the Pau Hana Market to see what they’re going to be distributing when the Chinese lion (Kukui Grove Center is also hosting an O‘ahu-based lion group!) makes its appearance on Saturday from 11 a.m. at Kukui Grove Center in Lihu‘e.
