Eat vegetarian this weekend
There is good news from COVID-19 for this Memorial Day. We won’t be getting stuck in traffic jams. And, the meat shortage will keep us safe from our outdoor grills.
Folks who grill hamburgers and hot dogs face a nasty choice. The U.S. Meat and Poultry Hotline advises grilling at high temperature to avoid food poisoning by E. coli and Salmonella bacteria. But the National Cancer Institute warns that high-temperature grilling of processed meats generates cancer-causing compounds.
Fortunately, we no longer need to choose between food poisoning and cancer.
A bunch of enterprising U.S. food processors have met this challenge head-on by developing a rich variety of convenient, healthful, delicious, plant-based veggie burgers, veggie dogs and soy nuggets. These products don’t harbor nasty bugs or cancer-causing compounds. They are missing the cholesterol, saturated fats, drugs, hormones and pesticides of their animal-based alternatives. And, they are waiting for us in the frozen-food section of our favorite supermarket, along with nut-based ice creams and other dairy-free desserts.
This Memorial Day, in the shadow of COVID-19, let’s stay safe in more ways than one.

I’m writing to you tonight hoping that you’ll do your best to reopen our Lihue Airport at the end of May. I’ve been unemployed since March 18, 2020. I’ve been a tour guide for the same company, Kaua‘i Luxury Transportation, for over 25 years. Like so many people here on our island and the state of Hawai‘i, our entire economy depends on the dollars generated by the tourist industry. I know you understand all this. There is no safer place in our state or the country than the island of Kaua‘i. At some point we’re going to have to reopen and get our economy going again. This virus will always be with us in some way or another, and those who don’t want to venture out or travel have that choice. In my opinion, we’ve waited long enough.
I believe strongly in playing it safe, but I also believe that life is a risk. It’s no longer safe when people are hurting financially and are forced to remain home. The staying in place causes so many dire problems. Kaua‘i has had seven suicides in a seven-day period this month. People have to socialize and get back to work.
I realize tourism from the mainland and other parts of the world will take some time, but as an island state we need to move among ourselves safely. Please consider that we as citizens have the common sense to follow procedures and regulations to travel safely. We only wish to be treated as responsible adults and not cattle being herded and fed.
I hope others will reach out to you to encourage you in your efforts to reopen the island of Kaua‘i.

2020 pandemic news I would like to see
Seniors fight targeted lockdown orders. Citing a violation of constitutional rights, a Seniors For Freedom on Kaua‘i spokesperson announced a lawsuit against lockdown quarantine orders directed primarily at seniors. “We might look feeble,” stated the spokesperson, “but we have a lot of financial firepower directed at protecting out individual freedoms.” A protest featuring a bonfire of walkers, canes and wheelchairs was announced as well. “We don’t need these stupid things as much as we thought,” said the spokesperson.
After taking ayahuasca (an Amazon tropical vine thought to have hallucinogenic properties) in a sacred ceremony, Mayor Kawakami and Governor Ige announced that they had both seen the true nature of reality as infinite consciousness and love, and that they planned a change in pandemic policy. “We both agree that the protocol followed by Sweden is the best course of action. Let the chips fall where they may. This will happen in any case, so let’s just cut to the chase.”
Christian Scientists around the world celebrated the revitalization of metaphysical practice in the world population. “Millions of people are actively assuming true health and freedom as the foundation of the universe. This has led to a massive decrease in the coronavirus,” stated a Christian Science spokesperson. Representatives of the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) agree. “According to our statistics the virus has virtually disappeared. Seems illogical and highly unlilkely, but our statistics don’t lie.”

We’re HAVE this problem in our country because of Trump and he’s making it worse minute by minute. Steve Yoder is also part of the problem by supporting him. I work in tourism too, but I don’t trust tourists to care about my safety as much as I do, evidenced by their willingness to travel during a pandemic. It’s not getting better, we are still seeing around 1,000 new Covid-19 cases PER HOUR in the US. How can anybody say we are flattening the curve? We are ready to start reopening Kauai for residents because we currently have no active cases here. Let’s try to keep it that way, not welcome the virus to our shores already. A good economy isn’t of any use to you if you are dead!

That’s a step in the right direction. Nobody cares about your safety as much as you do, regardless of political party. Though, one party routinely gets you to vote for them by promoting the lie that the opposing party is waging a war against you and that THEY, on the other hand, only want what is best for you.

Your fears are irrational. I recommend finding a different news source. You’ll feel better. Unless you don’t want to feel better.

2020 pandemic news I would NOT like to see:
Shortly after a premature re-opening of Kauai, the following residents died from a major resurgence of Covid-19: Steve Yoder, Molly Jones, 100 other varied Kauai residents, and this writer. A memorial service will be held at a Christian Scientist facility, no more than 10 persons can attend and must honor social distancing.
Despite taking a dangerous drug not recommended to prevent Covid-19 and not wearing a face mask in potentially dangerous situations, the Commander-in-Chief succumbed to the disease. His family has since occupied the White House and has refused to leave, citing “a Democratic Party hoax” claiming that Donald Trump is not really dead, just comatose.
Look, I am all in favor of opening Kauai to tourism, AFTER provisions are put in place to properly and securely test all those arriving at the airport and allow those who test negative to rent a car and enjoy Kauai while respecting local customs and laws, without having to quarantine for any period of time.
I am also in favor of losing the masks and the social distancing rules, as we have had no new active cases of the virus in over a month. Let’s get back to hugging one another!

I’m sorry, Molly, but you need to provide a citation for this. What representatives of the CDC made this comment? When? In what publication? Where did you see or hear this? Provide SOME kind of way to trace this claim.

Regarding the letter by Molly Jones entitled, “2020 pandemic news I would like to see” that appeared in the Sunday, May 24, 2020 edition, all are entitled to their opinions and to the free expression of them. However, the letter seems to give the impression that Christian Scientists either trivialize or hope to wish away the coronavirus pandemic. To the contrary, like many other people of faith, Christian Scientists feel tremendous compassion for others as the entire world struggles to meet this challenge. They are also obeying all applicable government guidelines and regulations and are actively praying for the protection, health, and comfort of their fellow citizens, especially those who have suffered the loss of jobs, health, or loved ones. Finally, they stand ready to lend any practical assistance that may be requested of them.
The letter may have also given some readers the false impression that Christian Scientists believe that inspiration can be derived from hallucinogens, when in fact Christian Scientists draw inspiration from the Bible. The practice of Christian Science is based on the premise that God is unchanging love, the divine presence of good that anyone can draw closer to — illustrated in the life of Christ Jesus and bringing regeneration and healing to human lives. This is the spirit in which our churches strive to be a helpful, embracing, and uplifting presence in their communities.
