Edward ‘Sonny’ ‘Lefty’ Remata
Edward “Sonny” “Lefty” Remata passed away on March 3, 2020, at the age of 87. He was born on June 20, 1932, in Waimea, and was a retired field worker and truck driver for Gay & Robinson Sugar Company.
He was preceded in death by parents Vicenta (Omakanim) and Crisanto Remata, daughter Joan, and sibling Sister Florence Remata.
He is survived by wife Bernandita “Berna” Remata, daughter Natalie (Remata) Masaveg of Kalaheo, son Dean (Sandi) Remata of Makaweli, grandchildren Nicholas Reyes, Traci Reyes, Jamieson Lampitoc, Cliff Remata of Mililani, Kaylene (Remata) Kajioka of Ewa Beach, Kacie Remata of Mililani and Karli Remata of Wahiawa, great-grandchildren Lansen and Braeden Reyes and Byanca and Brenton Cantrell of Ewa Beach, brothers David (Mercy) Remata Sr., Alfredo “Doric” Remata, Richard “Boy” Remata, Stanley “Stan” (Norma) Remata of Pearl City, Wilfred “Willie” Remata of California, Lawrence “Larry” Remata of California and Patrick “Pat” Remata of California, sisters Mildred “Inday” Olores, Elizabeth “Elisie” (Pat) Aquino and Vivian (Alvis) Nonaka, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A celebration of life is Saturday, April 25, with family visitation from 8 to 10 a.m., at Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Catholic Church in Waimea, with services to follow.
Nelia Galicinao Erorita
Nelia Galicinao Erorita of Hanama‘ulu passed away at Wilcox Medical Center on March 5, 2020, at the age of 66. She was employed at Burger King restaurant.
She was preceded in death by father Pedro Galicinao and son Felijar Erorita.
She is survived by mom Carlina Galicinao, husband Felix Erorita Sr., son Felix (Marygene) Erorita Jr., Neleo (Shallee) Erorita and Richjoy (Monica) Erorita, daughter Rose (Eddie) Motilla, numerous siblings in the Philippines and 11 grandchildren.
Family may visit with the family on Friday, March 27, at Aloha Assembly of God Church in Lihu‘e, with visitation at 9 a.m. and service at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Kalapaki Bay Memorial Park in Lihu‘e.
Borthwick Kaua‘i Mortuary is assisting the family with arrangements.
Koharu Kawamura
Koharu Kawamura (born Tanita), 101, of Waimea, died peacefully at home on March 4, 2020.
She was preceded in death by husband Koichi Kawamura and son Martin Kawamura.
She is survived by brother Mitsuyoshi Hiraoka, sons Wilfred (Miyuki) and Roy Kawamura, daughters Edna (Yuso) Kurihara and Jane Trubee, 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
She lived a full and vibrant life, being an avid member of her temple, working in her garden, creating patchwork items and participating in yearly o-bon activities, including dancing until she was 100 years old. Per her request, private services were held at the Waimea Honpa Hongwanji on March 20.
Abelardo Ragasa Iloreta
Abelardo Ragasa Iloreta, 67, of Kapa‘a, passed away at home on March 2, 2020. He was born in Sinait, Ilocos Sur, Philippines, on March 9, 1952, and retired from R. Electric and the County of Kaua‘i as an electrician and electrical inspector.
He is survived by wife Amelia Iloreta, daughter Abigail (Dustin Julian) Iloreta, parents Felix and Josefina Iloreta, siblings Arsenio (Daisy) Iloreta, Tony (Linda) Iloreta, Edna (Glenn) Douglas, Joselito (Leto) Iloreta, Jimmy (Emma) Iloreta, George (Josie) Iloreta and Edison (Jayne Brown) Iloreta, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A celebration of life is Saturday, March 28, at St. Catherine Church in Kapa‘a. Friends may drop off condolence cards at the reception table between 8:30 and 10 a.m. Mass will be celebrated with family only at 10 a.m. Burial will be at Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens for family only.
Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
William ‘Bill’ Wilcox
William “Bill” Wilcox, 78, passed away on Feb. 5, 2020. He was born in Wisconsin on Jan. 28, 1942, and grew up in Livermore, California, until retiring on Kaua‘i in 2010.
He was preceded in death by parents Roy and Leah Wilcox.
He is survived by wife Donna, sons Rick and David and their spouses, grandchildren Dalynn and Karra Wilcox, sister Judith and brother Michael.
After graduating from Santa Clara University, he worked at Bill worked at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, California, for 40 years, much of the time in the Laser Division.
He was well-known for his guitar-playing and singing. He entertained professionally in his early years and later on at weddings and events for friends.
He loved animals and could be seen walking his maltipoo, Cash, every morning, greeting other dog walkers at Kukuiolono Park.
He was an avid coin and stamp collector, and later in his life assembled a large record and guitar collection. He also enjoyed history.
After moving to Kaua‘i, he studied island history and became a tour guide at the Kaua‘i Museum and Grove Farm Museum, and joined the Kaua‘i Historical Society, of which he was president for two years.
He loved the slow pace of island life and the many wonderful friends he made here on Kaua‘i. He will be remembered for the joy he took in hosting dinner parties. He had a wonderful sense of humor, often torturing his guests with puns, delighting in the groans.
He enjoyed good wines and good food and often ended the parties with guitar music and singalongs.
His family is very grateful to the many angels at Kaua‘i Hospice for the warm caregiving they provided him. Any donations can be made to that organization.
A celebration of life, originally scheduled for Saturday, March 28, is postponed until later in the year.
