Parking meters, boulders — things have gone too far
What is happening to our island? Installed parking meters a Waimea Canyon lookout? Then someone rants and raves about Salt Pond area? This person is truly going off the deep end. I guess it’s true, “The squeaky wheel truly gets the grease.”
But to place boulders on the road — intentions to block off areas where local families love to spend their time with their local families — it’s very wrong! There are very few places on Kauai that locals can enjoy without a lot of tourists. This is a very special place for a lot us.
Why didn’t we have a community meeting? So that we could understand and listen to both sides. This is wrong!
The person has thanked the mayor on their Facebook for placing the boulders. I’m hoping the mayor has better judgment. We really need to coexist. It really seems like a lot of wasted energy and wasted island’s money (county workers and equipment) that could be used for more important things.

You obviously don’t know about all the homeless camping over on that side of salt pond and defecating out in the open. Not to mention dealing drugs and generally littering all over. Plenty of tourists spend time there too. Too many rats in a cage always leads to having to block access. I cleaned up many fewer dirty diapers on Saturday when I Along that stretch. Thank the mayor for not just surfing and lining his and his families pockets….. Kawakami, the boulder man!!!
The county is trying to be productive. It is a waste to see parking meters set up with not enough locals backing this idea up. That it hurts the local economy too on the west end of the island. Drop in visitors to kokee will be most visible.

Kokee is a state park. The state has been trying for years to charge admission to the park, lookouts, etc. There have been a number of meetings in that regard, and they (not the county) have implemented those changes that resulted from those meetings.
