Joyce Nagata of the Kilauea Senior Center said her dad, Seichi Akagi, learned how to paint when he was 80 years old through the senior center. He did a variety of artwork before leaving us. Joyce put together some of those classic pieces in a unique Christmas tree that got some nibbles in the auction taking place at the Kilauea Senior Center table Saturday during the Kauai Senior Craft and Food Fair at the Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall in Lihue. Kudos to the countys Department of Parks and Recreation and Na Kupuna Council for continuing this long tradition that used to be called the Senior Extravaganza (how many of you remember those days?).

Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami was busy doing a guest tour on Ron Wiley’s birthday (“I will tell the world!”), but still got to check out some of the goodies and entertainment (yes, Carol Manera Texeira was there, too!) before bestowing the Congressional Gold Medal of Honor on Restituto Bumagat.
Former mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. did the honors of rendering the national anthem and providing the invocation before changing into a green shirt (too bad the University of Hawaii Warriors didn’t fare well on that blue field — and did anyone see the ‘Aloha’ sign Mary Ann Manintin was planning to show?) for the Kapaa High School football game against Kamehameha-Hawaii Saturday at Vidinha Stadium in Lihue.
