PUHI — Carol Yotsuda of the Garden Island Arts Council was excited about getting additional funds from the screening of The Edge of Paradise Thursday morning at the Kauai Community College Performing Arts Center.
John Wehrheim, writer and producer of the recently-aired film about Taylor Camp on Kauai, presented the Garden Island Arts Council with an additional $1,000.
“I thought I made enough, and the GIAC didn’t make enough,” Wehrheim said as he handed a check to Yotsuda. “There was great community support for the screening.”
Wehrheim said this is the only successful film made on Kauai with all-Kauai funding, all Kauai locations, and an all-Kauai cast that has gotten international recognition.
The film based on Taylor Camp on Kauai’s North Shore will enjoy its Oahu Premiere on Feb. 17 at 7 p.m. at the historic Hawaii Theater in Honolulu. Proceeds will benefit the theater.
“We will have showings on other islands, but those dates will be announced,” Wehrheim said. “In addition to the Hawaii screenings, the film that feature new interviews, including Eduardo Malapit and Sam Lee, photos, music, and surf footage has been shown in Seaside, Oregon, Santa Cruz, California, and in New York.”
International screenings include Byron Bay, Australia where the showings were sold out.
Wehrheim said the Taylor Camp book was translated to German in 2016 and on contract to Spiegal TV through 2019 with The Edge of Paradise film released in the summer of 2018.
