Father’s Day is an international observance that normally falls on the third Sunday in June to celebrate and honor memories of dads who support and love their families.
Starting back in 1909 when an orphan, Grace Golden Clayton of Fairmont, West Virginia, proposed to her minister a church service in 1908 to honor fathers who perished in a mining disaster that killed more than 360 men that resulted in more than 1,000 children, including herself. The service would pay tribute to those fathers.
Another lady, Sonora Smart Dodd of Arkansas, a daughter of a Civil War veteran, lobbied her religious leaders for a service dedicated to fathers after listening to a sermon honoring mothers.
President Lyndon Johnson, in 1966, designated that the third Sunday in June should be Father’s Day. That was not made official until 1972 when President Richard Nixon signed it into law.
