LIHUE — Kelvin Moniz, executive director of the Kauai Independent Food Bank, accepted 472 pounds of food collected by Wilcox Medical Center Thursday as part of the hospital’s spring healthy food drive.
“This contribution is part of the hospital’s scheduled food drives during the year,” said Leona Perez, KIFB programs manager. “The hospital also collected food and funds during a recent flood relief drive.”
Perez said the flood relief effort produced 311 pounds of food and 662 pounds of non-food items, specifically cleaning and household supplies to help flood victims with the immediate need of cleaning following the floods.
Additionally, the drive collected $1,210 in cash which is going toward disaster relief.
Moniz said KIFB continues to assist with relief efforts as needed.
“Currently, we’re in the process of getting non-food items for disaster victims,” Moniz said. “The financial help, including the $10,000 we received from the Lions Foundation, goes a long way in the effort of replacing appliances and other household items that were destroyed during the floods. We will continue to help for as long as it’s needed.”
