LIHUE — Bob Schleck, president of the Kauai Historical Society board, said support like that presented by The Kauai Quilt Show is always needed.
“We are a group that was formed by the community,” Schleck said. “We are supported by the community, and this kind of support is always welcomed. It just happens to come when we greatly need the help.”
Lea Ingram and Jenny Conley, representing The Kauai Quilt Show, presented Schleck with a check for $2,960, representing the sale of a Charity Quilt during the Kauai Quilt Show which opened to the public from Feb. 9 through 21 at the Kauai Society of Artists gallery at Kukui Grove Center.
“During this year’s show, we raised $6,319 for local nonprofits, including the Kauai Historical Society,” said Ingram. “That’s more than last year’s show. Peter Kovacik of Canada purchased the quilt created by Pat Littlejohn with the proceeds going directly to the Kauai Historical Society, Kovacik’s nonprofit of choice.”
Other nonprofits receiving proceeds from the sale of charity quilts included the Kauai Child and Family Service, the Kauai Cat Project, the Kauai Independent Food Bank, the Kauai Habitat for Humanity, Kauai Hospice, the Kauai Humane Society, American Cancer Society Relay for Life, the Wilcox Health Foundation, and the YWCA of Kauai Women’s Shelter.
Schleck’s surprise at the award was heightened by the fact he was not aware the historical society was on the list of charities benefiting from the sale of charity quilts.
Ingram said the 2018 Kauai Quilt Show opened to more than 2,000 people visiting the exhibit over a 13-day span.
Quilt viewers were able to not only participate in Charity Quilt, but vote on their favorites.
Esther Smith’s “Japanese Fan” earned the most votes from viewers, and earned gift certificates from Discount Fabric Warehouse, Kapaia Stitchery, and Vicky’s Fabrics.
Ingram’s “Koloa Sugar Mill-Back to Earth” garnered the second most viewer votes, and Erika Hessheimer’s “Bursting Sunshine” picked up the third most viewer votes.
