KAUMAKANI—The Rookies clinched the second round of the Kaua`i Senior Centers’
Softball League by taking a solid 14-5 win over Kawaihau at the final outing at
the Kaumakani Field.
West Kaua`i, who had earlier taken control of the
first round, will meet the Rokies in a playoff contest that starts at 9:30 a.m.
at the Eleele Field on July 29 with the winner of that game playing in the
“A” Division with the loser playing in the “B” bracket of
the state senior citizen’s softball tournament that will be played at the New
Kapa`a Ball Park on August 8-10.
There will be no games played on the July
22 weekend.
Archie Fontanilla and Wally Sonoda of the Rookies combined to
take the win on the hill with Fontanilla picked up the win and Teddy Daligdig
and Paul Awazu tossing for Kawaihau. Daligdig was saddled with the
loss.
Hank Nishikawa walloped a homerun on 2 hits to lead the Rookies’ big
sticks with Wally Sonoda and Richard Vidinha each picking up three hits. Nelly
Mendonca and Gorio Planas paired hits.
Joe Pendergest, Terry Pantohan, and
Don Boro led Kawaihau with homeruns with Harry Villanueva and Paul Awazu
pairing hits in the losing effort.
East Kaua`i 10, Lihu`e As 9
Ronnie
Holt went the distance to pick up the win for East Kaua`i with Joe Brun,
relieving Buster Matsumura for Lihu`e, suffering the loss.
Alex Youn led
the East Kaua`i offense with 3 hits while Ed Bales, Vince Ephan, and Walter
Silva pairing hits.
Glenn Akina, ending the day with 3 hits, led the Lihu`e
bats with Ismo Yoshishige and John Ochoco pairing hits.
West Kaua`i 20,
K-Makules 7
West Kaua`i hit on three K-Makule pitchers for a 20-7 victory.
Joe Silva went the distance for West Kaua`i with John Taboniar, Tada Hashimo,
and Jay Acoba working the mound for K-Makules, Taboniar suffering the
loss.
Frank Bukoski led the West Kaua`i bats with a homer on three hits and
a walk. Casey Moniz also picked up a homer on 3 hits and a sacrifice fly.
Maxie Moreno was 3-for-4.
Lefty Remata paced the K-Makule hitting with a
homer on 3 hits with Herman Fraticelli and Tada Hashimoto each coming up with 3
hits.
With no games scheduled until the July 29 playoffs, the season ended
with the Rookies (9-1) leading followed by West Kaua`i (8-2), Lihu`e A’s (6-4),
East Kaua`i (5-5 ), K-Makules (2-8), and Kawaihau (0-10).
