LIHU`E—Coaches of all types of sports can become part of the Sports
Certification program co-sponsored and funded by the Parks and Recreation
Department of the County of Kaua`i, the Kawaihau District Leadership Coalition
and Sports Leagues of Kaua`i.
A day-long seminar presented by coaches is
scheduled for the Raddison Kaua`i Beach Hotel on July 15, starting at 8
a.m.
Coaches wishing to take advantage of the knowledge that will be
available to them need to have firm registrations by July 7. Registration can
be accomplished through the Parks and Recreation office at
241-6277.
Presentors at the “A Curriculum for Coaches of All Sports, Phase
III” include Coop DeReense, former assistant baseball coach at University of
Hawaii, a Major League baseball scout and an associate professor at Hawai`i;
Frank Doyle, head men’s soccer coach at Hawai`i Pacific University; Merv Lopes,
former head men’s basketball coach at Chaminade University; Ken Nakasone,
lecturer and graduate assistant, athletic training program; and Jon Stanley,
former assistant coach of the University of Hawai`i men’s volleyball team,
director of the Hawai`i Juniors Volleyball Club, and a member of the
International and National Volleyball Hall of Fame.
A separate seminar
covering football will be scheduled at a later date.
“Injuries: Prevention,
Care, and Management” will kick off the July 15 agenda. Afterward, additional
sessions covering tactics, skills and strategies for baseball, volleyball,
basketball and soccer will be offered.
A light lunch will be served as
part of the proceedings. Additional information is available from the Parks and
