As quickly as this magic Kaua’i High School girls volleyball season began, it
has ended. T he Raiders fell to a tough St. Francis squad 15-2, 15-9 in the
quarterfinals of the 2000 Nissan State Volleyball tournament Thursday at the
Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu.
“We started the game very slow, and I
actually thought we were going to get the bullet and lose 15-0,” Kaua’i coach
Richard Roberts said in a telephone call from Honolulu. “But we managed to get
a couple of points on Heather’s [Roberts] serve.
“Then in the second game
we started working the ball around and were able to make things
interesting.”
But St. Francis was too tough.
“They were dynamite from
the service line,” Roberts said of Kaua’i’s opponent.
Danielle Kiyabu led
the Raiders with three kills.
“There is nothing for our girls to hang their
heads about,” Roberts said. “They came over here and proved to themselves that
they can compete. They leave this season with no doubts.
“We put our best
foot forward tonight [Thursday], despite what the scoreboard said. I’m very
proud of our girls.”
Kehaulani Regidor led Kaua’i with nine kills in its
victory over Molokai Wednesday.
Kaua’i ended its season 9-1 overall. The
Raiders will be remembered as the first team other than Waimea to represent the
island at the state tourney.
Boys
The Raiders fell 15-1,
15-11 to Punahou Thursday, eliminating themselves from from the
tournament.
Kaua’i led 8-6 in the second game, but the Buffnblu stormed
back, scoring the next eight points for a 14-8 advantage. Mark Rodrigues led
the Raiders with 15 kills.
Punahou has won the last six state tournaments
in a row.
The Raiders end their season 7-4 overall
