William Chu
William “Bill” Chu, of Kapa’a, Kaua’i, died at home on Feb. 13, 2001, at the age of 86.
Born in Hanalei, Kaua’i on July 8, 1915, he was a retired Machinist with Hawaiian Cannery and Director of Parks and Recreation with County of Kaua’i; he is survived by: his wife: Violet Chu; daughter-in-law: Lei Chu of Makakilo, O’ahu; seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two brothers: Milton Chu and Charles Chu, both of Honolulu, O’ahu; four sisters: Eleanor Santos, Lily Chock, Mary Wann, and Katherine Lee, all of Honolulu, O’ahu; numerous nieces and nephews.
Friend may visit with the family at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 24, at the Kapa’a First Hawaiian Church; service officiated by Kahu Kamanu will begin at 11 a.m. Casual attire is suggested and flowers omitted.
Arrangements are being handled by Garden Island Mortuary, Ltd.
Deogracio Doctolero
Deogracio “Joe” or “Asiong” Aguinaldo Doctolero of Hanama’ulu, Kaua’i, died Feb. 13, 2001 at Wilcox Memorial Hospital, at the age of 94.
Born Oct. 16, 1907 in Luson Norte, Philippines, he was a retired machine operator for the Sugar Industry with Lihu’e Plantation.
Deogracio Doctolero was preceded in death by his son: Anthony “Tony” Doctolero, three sons: Deogracio “Baba” Doctolero, Melvin (Nicole) Doctolero, Michael Doctolero, one daughter: Julie Doctolero Kaluahine all of Hanama’ulu, 9 grandchildren, Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 26, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Kapaia, from 9 a.m. Mass to be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. by Father Paul. Burial to follow at the Kaua’i Memorial Gardens.
Casual attire is suggested. Arrangements are being handled by Borthwick Kaua’i Mortuary.
Nikichi Iwai
Nikichi “Nicky” Iwai of Koloa, Kaua’i, died Feb. 16, 1923, in Koloa, at ‘Oma’o Nursing Home at the age of 77.
A personnel clerk for the County of Kaua’i, he was born Feb. 25, 1923, in Koloa, Kaua’i.
He is survived by his wife: Yoshi “Sue” Iwai of Koloa; two sons: Michael Iwai of Kapa’a and Keith Iwai of California; one daughter: Colleen Iwai of Koloa; two sisters: Masato Sakimae of Koloa and Mitsue Nakamura of O’ahu; one brother: Edward Okayo Iwai of Chicago; two grandsons and two granddaughters.
Private services were held. Arrangements were handled by Borthwick/Kaua’i Mortuary.
Maxima Morris
Maxima B. Morris of Kalaheo, Kaua’i, died at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on Feb. 18, 2001, at the age of 80.
Born in Lawai, Kaua’i on Nov. 18, 1920, she was a housewife.
She is survived by her husband: Americo Morris Sr. of Kalaheo, Kaua’i; three sons: Americo (Rose) Morris Jr. of Kalaheo, Kaua’i, Victor (Reita) Morris of North Carolina, and Richard (Deborah) Morris of Wailua, Kaua’i; one daughter: Maxine (Jerry) Correa of Kalaheo, Kaua’i; 15 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Alice Richarson of Fresno, Calif., and Salome Rivera of Lawai, Kaua’i; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may visit with the family at 9 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 26, 2001 at the Holy Cross Catholic Church in Kalaheo; Mass officiated by Father Keahi will begin at 11 a.m. Followed by burial at Kaua’i Memorial Gardens. Aloha attire is suggested.

Helen Rodrigues
Helen Morgan Rodrigues of Kapa’a, Kaua’i, died Feb. 20, 2001, at the age of 97.
Born Jan. 10, 1904, in Kapa’a, she graduated from the Territorial Normal School in 1930 and was an elementary teacher at Ha’ena, Hanalei, Hanama’ulu, Ko’olau, and Kapa’a Schools. She will be remembered for teaching and singing rollicking Hawaiian songs to generations of students. She retired after 36 years of teaching.
She is survived by her husband, Joseph Rodrigues of Kapa’a; sisters: Alice Paik of Kapa’a and Ramona Hess of Honolulu; brothers, Albert Morgan of Wailua and Stanford Morgan of California; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation on Thursday, March 1, at St. Catherine’s Church from 9:30 a.m. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial to follow at St. Catherine’s cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Borthwick/Kaua’i Mortuary.
