The Island School recently took a step toward putting itself on Kaua’i’s athletic map.
On December 15 the independent school, located behind Kaua’i Community College on Kaumualii Hwy., officially christened a pair of new grass fields.
Athletic Director Sean Magoon trusts the field will be put to good use very soon.
“We would like to see the fields, in addition to serving our kids, turn into a situation like Hanapepe Stadium, good for mulitpurpose,” Magoon said. “They’re beautiful fields that we hoped will be used by the island one day.”
There are two fields, a full-sized soccer facility and a track & football field.
“We’re hoping to use the soccer field for summer programs,” Magoon said. “It’s just a beautiful wide-open space with nice grass.”
The field designed for track also has the size and proportion necessary to support football, though with its limited high school enrollment, Island School likely won’t be utilizing that aspect of the field anytime soon.
Though the fields are as yet unmarked, Magoon said they are already a big hit at the school.
“The fourth, fifth and sixth graders are bending over backwards to get on them,” he said. “And our soccer program — we’ve been practicing on a 40 yard by 50 yard space behind the high school, so they’re pretty excited too.”
The cost of the fields, including procurement of the land, was $2.5 million.
“We have a very supportive board and the amount of financial contributions are outstanding,” Magoon said. “We’re making a lot of strides at Island School.”
