Playing on Super Bowl Sunday, defending AJA champion Hanapepe extended its winning streak to three games with a 9-4 victory over Lihu’e. In the other game of the day, Kalaheo cruised to a 17-2 victory over Kapa’a.
In the first game, Hanapepe jumped out to a 5-0 advantage, Leroy Nonaka scored on a Wendall Nonaka basehit. Wendall then scored on a Vince Nitta sacrifice fly. Then Clifford Matsusaka banged a triple that drove home Kelly Robinson and Scott Yemase. Matsusaka then scored on an error.
Lihu’e got a run back in the top of the third, but Hanapepe responded with three more in its half of the inning to seal the game. Wendall Nonaka picked up the win. He threw five innings of five-hit ball. He gave up two runs and struck out two.
Buddy Taniguchi got the save. Barry Kawamura was the losing pitcher. He threw nine innings, giving up nine runs and six hits. He struck out three.
Kalaheo exploded in the first inning of the second game, putting up 12 runs. Each starter scored once in the inning and the first seven men in the lineup batted twice.
Big first-inning bats for Kalaheo were Troy Kaneshiro (two-run triple), Kainoa Santos (single, triple and four runs) and Duane Miyasato (two-run single).
Kalaheo’s Liko Perreira was the winning pitcher. He tossed five innings of five-hit ball. He gave up two runs and struck out five.
Kapa’a pitchers were Robin Lore, Tyler Wakuta, Owen Koishigawa and Kenderson Caspillo.
Next week Hanapepe faces Kapa’a at 10 a.m. Kalaheo squares off against Makaweli at 1 p.m. Both games are at Vidinha Stadium.
