HANAPEPE — It hung tough, but in the end, Kapa’a couldn’t capitalize at crucial times, falling 2-0 to Mid-Pacific Institute Friday at the Waimea High School Invitational.
With the bases loaded and just one out in the top of the fourth, the Warriors fell short of scoring a run. Chris Lary was picked off at third for the second out, and a Bradley Wakuta ground ball ended the inning.
Kapa’a did get a solid effort on the mound from senior Robin Lore. Despite picking up the loss, the hurler held a potent Mid-Pac offense at bay, giving up just six hits and walking two. He recorded no strike outs.
The Owls put their runs on the board in the first and fifth innings. Mid-Pac pitchers Keric Chang — the winner — and Pat McGuigan — save — held Kapa’a to just two hits. The Warriors’ Kaili Panui got one of them; Dustin Mundon recorded the other. The loss dropped Kapa’a’s tournament record to 1-1 (2-4 on the season). Mid-Pac improved to 2-0-1 in the tourney.
The Kaua’i Interscholastic Federation highlight came in the final game of the day. In a pitcher’s duel, Waimea’s Kalailoa Taniguchi emerged the victor as he gunned down Leilehua 1-0. Waimea improved to 1-0 in its tournament (2-4 on the season).
Kaua’i High School dropped a heartbreaker in its only game of the day. The Red Raiders led Leilehua 4-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning. But the Mules were not to be denied, scoring three runs for the 5-4 win. Kaua’i dropped to 2-1 in the tournament (7-3 on the season). The win pushed Leilehua’s tourney record to 1-2.
In the day’s other game, Mid-Pac and Kahuku ended an offensive shootout tied 10-10. In the game, the Red Raiders got a grand slam from Jeremiah Bohnet and a homer from Daniel Kawakahui.
Saturday begins with Kapa’a facing Kaua’i at 9 a.m. Then it’s Kapa’a vs. Leilehua at 11 a.m., Waimea vs. Kahuku at 1 p.m. and Waimea vs. Mid-Pac at 3 p.m. All games are at Hanapepe Stadium.
