Hanapepe took another step toward a perfect season Sunday. The defending Americans of Japanese Ancestry champions whipped Kapa’a 22-3 to move to 6-0 on the season. Kapa’a dropped to 0-6 on the year.
In Sunday’s other game, Kalaheo defeated Makaweli 12-1. The victory moved Kalaheo to 5-1 on the season, allowing it to keep pace with the league leaders.
Hanapepe 22, Kapa’a 3
Hanapepe pitchers Kelly Robinson (W) and Buddy Taniguchi teamed to hold Kapa’a to just five hits on the afternoon. Robinson started the game, allowing just three hits and striking out six batters. Taniguchi struck out two.
Kapa’a’s pitchers were Kendersen Caspillo (L) and Allen Mundon. Mundon struck out eight in his time on the mound.
The league leaders came out smoking. In the first three innings, Hanapepe spanked 17 hits and scored 19 runs. Hanapepe added three more runs in the fifth, while Kapa’a was able to put two more on the board.
Scott Yamase paced Hanapepe with seven RBI on a single, a double and two triples. In addition, Vince Nitta hit an inside-the-park home run; Wendall Nonaka banged two doubles and a single; Dean Nonaka rapped two doubles; Nolan Albrado knocked a triple and two singles; and Leroy Nonaka and George Kamala each had two singles and two RBI.
For Kapa’a, only Caspillo was able to manage two hits. Derek Lacaden, Evan Gibson and Owen Koishigawa each hit a single.
Kalaheo 12, Makaweli 1
Pitchers Liko Pereira (W), Kaina McCallum and Duane Miyasato combined to allow just one run and five hits. McCallum led the bunch with three strike outs.
Makaweli pitchers were Russell Nakata (L) and Scott Shimabukuro.
Kalaheo began the game strong, scoring eight runs on 10 hits over the first two innings of play.
Big hitters for Kalaheo were McCallum with a home run, a double, a single and two RBI. Kyle Higashi got two hits and two RBI; Scott Serizawa hit a single and drove in two runs; D.J. Higashi doubled and got a single; and Casey Oketani hit two singles. Miyasato had two hits and an RBI.
Nakata led Makaweli with two hits and a RBI. Mike Shimatsu hit a double. Brandon Ishibashi, Royce Ijimaand and Reid Tanita each hit a single.
