Kauai’s Terry Chun and Titus Kinimaka took eighth place in the first Tow-In World Cup surfing competition held Monday at ‘Jaws’ on Maui’s northeast coast.
The team scored 108 points, with event winners Garrett McNamara of and Rodrigo Resende of Brazil scoring 143.6 points to take the $70,000 first prize.
Competitors towed in and rode huge waves in the 20 – 40 feet range.
Two rounds of competition were held with points based on each surfer’s top three rides.
Kauai’s Braden Dias placed ninth in the big-wave Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau surf contest held Monday at Waimea Bay on O’ahu.
Six-time world surfing champion Kelly Slater won the prestigious big-wave surfing event.
Dias rode clean waves in the 20 to 30 feet range before a crowd of more than 5,000. A photo of Dias and Slater appeared as the lead front page photo in the Tuesday morning edition of the Honolulu Star-Bulletin.
