Kaua’i County wants to convince the people of Hanamaulu that the proposed new landfill site, located on Grove Farm Co.-owned land behind Kalepa Mountain, won’t negatively impact the surrounding area.
So the county is sponsoring a field trip to the 97 acres this Saturday for a first-hand look. Citizens can book a ride on one of three 20-seat buses for the tour by calling 241-6303.
Wally Rezentes Sr., Mayor Maryanne Kusaka’s chief aide, said Tuesday there are still plenty of seats left.
“We are welcoming everybody that is interested,” Rezentes said.
Rezentes, among county officials who have gone into the Hanamaulu neighborhoods close to the possible landfill site to invite residents to attend Saturday’s tour, is a proponent of the Kalepa site. He said he’s made three visits to it, paying “special attention” to roads and potential visual impacts of a landfill operation.
In addition to Saturday’s excursion, next week the county will hold a pair of public meetings to dispense information on the current landfill in Kekaha and the proposed new facility.
The Kekaha landfill has an estimated three years left before it reaches its permitted capacity. The county is proposing extending the dump’s life by three years by expanding on the current site.
The public meeting concerning that proposal is set for next Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at Kekaha Neighborhood Center.
