Kaumakani hosted Saturday’s Senior Softball three-game series, as the Rookies, the Lihue A’s and East Kaua’i left the picturesque diamond with victories.
Some say it was home field advantage, others say it’s just to hard to beat the Rookies. The K-Makules put up a good fight, but they found out no matter what anyone says, the Rookies aren’t 2-0 in the second round for nothing.
The K-Makules fell to the Rookies 13-8 in the first game on Saturday, with Archie Fontanilla picking up his 11th win of the season (his second in the round two). Fontanilla also had three hits along with Nellie Mendoca, who added three of his own.
Jay Acoba got the loss for the K-Makules. Ernie Domingo had three hits in the loss.
The second game proved to be a nailbiter. And yes, the Lihue A’s, topping the list with the Rookies as one of the two best teams in Senior Softball, pulled out the win.
The A’s squeezed by West Kaua’i 4-3 to improves to a perfect 2-0 in the second round. West Kaua’i begrudgingly drops to 0-2.
The A’s Joe Brun picked up the win; Frank Bukoski got the loss.
Tomo Hiranaka and Glenn Akina paired hits for the A’s. Bukoski and Ron Javier each had two hits for West Kaua’i.
East Kaua’i’s Ronnie Holt threw the first shut-out game of the season, blanking Kawaihau 15-0 in the final game of the day at Kaumakani Field.
Ted Tamashiro started for Kawaihau with Paul Awazu in relief. Tamashiro took the loss.
Alex Youn was East Kaua’i’s big bat, notching a homer on three hits. Ray Sam Fong added three hits of his own, and Chris Asunsion knocked out a homer.
Only Paul Awazu paired hits for Kawaihau.
This Saturday’s games will be played at Waimea Park with the K-Makules (1-1) hosting the Lihue A’s (2-0) at 9:15 a.m. The second game Kawaihau (0-2) will play West Kaua’i (0-2), and in the final game, the Rookies (2-0) will face East Kaua’i (1-1).
