Tyler Matsubayashi, one of the top high school kendoists in the state, prepares to defend against an opponent during a demonstration by the Lihu’e Kendo Club at the Kodomo no Hi celebration held Sunday at the Lihu’e Honwanji Mission in Kapaia. According to kendo practioners, the legendary laser battle in ‘Star Wars’ was inspired by the ancient martial art form that was developed to provide samurai warriors a means of staying in form without injuring themselves. Matsubayashi, a senior, practices out of the Aiea Taiheiji.
Kaua’i’s Stacy Sueoka of Kaua’i High School, is one of four females who practice at the Lihu’e dojo, the other three being Ariel Bishop, Cherie Holck, and Dawn Akimoto.
