Lower-income homeowners have until Monday, July 1 to apply for an additional exemption from some of their real property taxes, for next year’s tax bill.
Those applying in person must have had adjusted gross income under $40,000 in 2000, and should bring state and federal income tax forms for that year, to the county Department of Finance Real Property Assessment Division in the Lihue Civic Center.
Last year, the Kaua’i County Council passed an ordinance that raised the income level for the additional exemption based on income, from $30,000 to $40,000.
It was the council’s intent that the ordinance take effect for the 2002 tax year, but, due to a clerical error, that language was left out of the final draft of the ordinance.
To correct the situation, the council recently passed, and Mayor Maryanne Kusaka approved, an ordinance change that will allow an additional exemption for tax-year 2003 only, for those who qualify and apply.
The additional income exemption must be applied for by Monday, July 1.
