KAPA’A — The Rookies can beat the Lihue A’s rather convincingly, but they can’t win the Senior Softball title without a fight.
Although the Rookies beat the A’s 17-7 last Saturday, the K-Makules, who were non-existent in the first round hunt, are tied with the Rookies at the end of the second round and will face them in a playoff game at Eleele Park on Saturday at 9:15 a.m. Since the Rookies won the first round, if they win the playoff game they win the Senior Softball Championship. If the K-Makules win, they will clinch the second round and will face the Rookies in a second game for the title.
Last weekend’s games:
In the first game played at Kapa’a Ball Field, West Kaua’i topped East Kaua’i 12-5.
Joe Silva went the distance for the win, while Walter Silva took the loss.
Big Hitters for West Kaua’i: Ron Javier had two hits and two walks; Danny Manus was 2-2 at the plate, and all pairing hits were Frank Bukoski, “Bruddah” Rittmiester, Pat Pauao and Joe Silva.
Big Hitters for East Kaua’i: Sonny Waialeale hit a perfect 3-3. Also hitting 3-3 was John Garcia. Pairing hits for East Kaua’i were Walter Silva and Alex Youn.
In the second game, the Rookies stomped on the Lihue A’s 17-7.
Archie Fontanilla got the win for the Rookies; Joe Brun took the loss for the A’s.
Big hitters for the Rookies: Pat Baniaga led the way with three hits; Nelly Mendonca, Dickie Saliana and Ray Espino each had two
For the Lihue A’s: Glen Akina notched three hits; Peter Rayno, Dwight Fujii and Herb Honjo each paired hits.
Although they were outhit by Kawaihau, the K-Makules kept pace with the Rookies by winning 5-3 in the final game at Kapa’a.
Dado Paiste was the winning pitcher for the K-Makules; Teddy Daligdig took the loss.
Only Lefty Remata had significant success at the plate for the K-Makules. He had three hits. No other K-Makule notched more than one hit as Daligdig gave up just seven hits in the contest.
Dick Millar was Kawaihau’s big bat. He notched three hits. Daligdig and Joe Penderqest paired hits.
